Fabric Yardage Calculator
To use Fabric Yardage Calculator, follow the steps:
- Measure the length of the fabric:
- Lay out the fabric on a flat surface.
- Using a measuring tape, measure the length of the fabric from one end to the other. Make sure to measure along the edge of the fabric.
- Measure the width of the fabric:
- Starting from one edge, measure the width of the fabric using a measuring tape. This measurement should be perpendicular to the length of the fabric.
- Convert the measurements to yards:
- If you measured the length and width in inches, divide each measurement by 36 to convert it to yards.
- If you measured the length and width in centimeters, divide each measurement by 91.44 to convert it to yards.
- Calculate the total yardage:
- Multiply the converted length by the converted width to find the total area of the fabric in square yards.
Here’s an example calculation:
Let’s say you measured the length of the fabric as 72 inches and the width as 40 inches.
Converting the measurements to yards: Length = 72 inches ÷ 36 = 2 yards Width = 40 inches ÷ 36 = 1.11 yards (rounded to two decimal places)
Calculating the total yardage: Total Yardage = 2 yards × 1.11 yards = 2.22 square yards
So, in this example, you would need 2.22 yards of fabric.
Formula:
Yards of Fabric = (Length in inches ÷ 36) × (Width in inches ÷ 36)
This formula converts the length and width measurements of the fabric from inches to yards by dividing each measurement by 36, as there are 36 inches in a yard. Then, it multiplies the converted length by the converted width to find the total area of the fabric in square yards.
