What is the weight of a T-shirt?
The weight of a t-shirt depends on its fabric GSM, body length, and width. A t-shirt has two panels: front and back. We measure both to calculate the final weight. Textile engineers use a standard formula to find the fabric area and convert that into kilograms using GSM.

The formula is:
Weight (kg) = (GSM × Length × Width × 2) / 1,000,000
Here,
- GSM means grams per square meter.
- Length is the height of the T-shirt in centimeters.
- Width is the chest width of the t-shirt in centimeters.
- We multiply by 2 because of the front and back sides.
- 1,000,000 converts square cm and grams to kilograms.
This formula gives the most accurate weight for basic short-sleeved t-shirts.
Example calculation
Suppose a t-shirt has the following data:
- GSM = 160
- Length = 70 cm
- Width = 50 cm
Now apply the formula:
Weight = (160 × 70 × 50 × 2) / 1,000,000
= (160 × 7000) / 1,000,000
= 1,120,000 / 1,000,000
= 1.12 kg
So, the t-shirt weighs 1.12 kg.
What is GSM in fabric?
GSM stands for grams per square meter. It tells us how heavy the fabric is. A lower GSM means light fabric. A higher GSM means thicker or heavier fabric. In t-shirts, common GSM ranges from 140 to 220.
