Calculate fabric GSM (Grams per Square Meter) using every standard textile industry method
– GSM cutter, knitted fabric construction, woven fabric construction, fabric roll GSM,
and unit conversion. Every field carries a default sample value, so you can click Calculate
straight away and see how each formula works.
GSM Cutter Method (Direct Weighing)
The most common lab test for knitted, woven, and nonwoven fabric.
A round sample is cut with a GSM cutter of known area and weighed on a digital scale.
Formula: GSM = (Sample Weight in grams × 10,000)
÷ Sample Area in cm²
Knitted Fabric GSM (Construction Method)
Used to estimate GSM before production, from fabric construction parameters.
Formula: GSM = [(Wales/inch × Courses/inch × Loop Length in mm)
÷ Yarn Count (Ne)] × 0.9154
Woven Fabric GSM (Construction Method)
Estimates GSM from thread density and yarn count, before the fabric is produced.
Formula: GSM = [(EPI ÷ Warp Ne) + (PPI ÷ Weft Ne)] × 23.5
Fabric Roll GSM (Bulk Verification Method)
Used on the factory floor to verify bulk fabric weight against approved GSM.
Formula: GSM = Total Fabric Weight (grams)
÷ (Length in meters × Width in meters)
Ounces per Square Yard to GSM Converter
Converts US buyer specifications (common for denim and heavy wovens) into GSM.
Formula: GSM = Weight (oz/yd²) × 33.906
GSM to Fabric Roll Weight (Reverse Calculation)
Used for costing and yarn/fabric requirement planning once GSM is fixed.
Formula: Total Weight (kg) =
(GSM × Width in meters × Length in meters) ÷ 1000
